TMAU and colds

Postby Tenacity » Mon Nov 19, 2012 6:48 pm

Just wondering if this chimes with anybody else's experiences, as so far it doesn't seem very common...

My question concerns TMAU and colds. Every once in a while I get a cold that I'm not able to "nip in the bud" and it always gets really bad. I strongly suspect that most of these either begin as bacterial colds or develop a bacterial component, as I will always get to a "yellow mucous" stage, and often (right now, for example) I will get bad cystic acne. I tend to feel really drained, and end up in bed - which really doesn't sound normal for a person with "the sniffles".

On these occasions my TMAU dramatically changes from a condition that's more or less manageable with a strict diet to something absolutely off the chart. I've never managed to get a lab sample done in such circumstances, as it's easier getting out of the house when you're well, but I would say my TMA output probably goes from around 30 (if I eat badly) to something like 200. I can't tell if I feel sick because of the bacteria, the unbearable stench or the fact that I'm stuck in bed and can't go out. Either way, it's not good.

I know Dr Dolphin once said that colds will lower enzyme activity, and I'm sure I read an article in a journal once that supports this, but seriously it is WAY too bad for that to be the only problem.

Does anybody think I have a case for a long course of doxycycline? I know it's not a regular antibiotic, but it's helped my TMAU symptoms in the past. I was going to ask one of the doctors in the next couple of days, anyway, but thought I'd seek people's opinions...

Thanks!

PS: Sorry for not being on here in aaagggessss!!!

Am I to assume from the fact that nobody's replied that this hasn't happened to anybody else??

I had bad reactions after I had bacterial bronchitis, but put it down to taking ibuprofen and cough mixture... I was too terrified to take antibiotics as I'm convinced they kick-started my Tmau in the first place. I have noticed that I suffered terrible colds when I was younger, but seemed to develop immunity in my 40's... It's interesting that doxycycline helped you, as it also seemed to help glasgowguy.... last time I heard from him he could eat eggs  it's not one of the usual antibiotics prescribed for us...and you can drink alcohol on it as well.. Let us know how you get on, if your doctor thinks they're a good idea for you..kx

Hi Kittycat,

Thanks for replying.

I'm pleased to hear there's another person who's benefitted from doxycycline. I LOVE eggs, and would give anything to be able to eat them again! I have a lot going on this month, but next month I will try a long course of doxycycline and let everybody know how it goes.

If you don't mind me asking, what are the circumstances that led to antibiotics kick-starting TMAU. Were you pre or post puberty at the time, and are you 100% sure it wasn't the bacterial infection itself that caused the TMAU? I find stuff like that fascinating, but no worries if you don't want to answer. :)

Hi Tenacity.. Happy New year.

It's nice to talk to you, and ask me anything you like... I'm completely 'out'!

After I got the odour, and finally got around to wondering why this had suddenly happened, I blamed going on the Pill, as it had made me very ill. But 30 years later, having read these forums, I thought it was antibiotics because that was the opinion of the specialists.. Now, I think maybe it was a combination of events... The Pill, antibiotics, and the stress of leaving home, having a stressful life, and even a change of diet...including drinking gallons of coffee....

But what I do believe is that Tmau2 started around about the 1960's, people affected seem to be increasing, and is the result of some drug(antibiotic/pesticide/herbicide/GMO ?)that badly affected our stomach flora, or gave us leaky gut type problems, so that toxins were taken into our bloodstreams.. But that is only my feeling, and I have asked countless elderly people if they every heard of someone smelling as bad as we do, and they hadnt encountered it.. Bearing in mind that in the UK people were mainly extremely poor, with no bathrooms and very few changes of clothing before the 60's... Sorry I'm rambling!
The low choline diet works very well for me, but to be totally odour free, I would have to exist on a really bland diet as well...any taste or smell of anything in food seems to result in the same odour from me.

Have you any clue to what kick started your Tmau, Tenacity? Kcx

Hi Kittycat,

Happy New Year to you too, and sorry for the delayed reply!

Thanks very much for answering my query. I think it's interesting to know how people's experiences compare. Mine started around about puberty, which is fairly typical - especially for girls. I was in class watching a hygiene video of all things. It was like somebody flicked a switch. When I woke up that morning I was healthy, and by the time I went home I had TMAU. Very strange. I'm assuming puberty was the cause, but I had an unexplained illness a short while before that, so I guess it could have been some kind of bacterial hepatitis or chemical poisoning that affected my liver. We were having our school roof tarred, so anything is possible.

I think I will bring up the long course of antibiotics next time I have my TMAU consultation...

Take care.

:) x

Hi tenacity, I was just reading your topic. I thought I would just let you know that I took another 7 day course of doxycycline tablets through the festive period. From the 25th to 31st of December. Again it seemed to helped me. Was out for 4 of those nights drinking. 3 on all day and night clubbing and again never got any reactions from people in the clubs. And I done a lot of dancing. I avoid red meat and also eggs while on them as a just incase. But that's twice I've used them and they have made me feel a lot more confident. If only I could stay on them all the time. Even my mouth and breath feel as fresh as daisy in the morning or after drinking a few lattes. I never developed symptoms till I was 13. The summer of school I came back and that was where my life changed. I don't remember taking any specific antibiotics. But I did find my enjoyment of drinking alcohol that summer so that's what maybe triggered mines.

Hi Glasgowguy,

Thanks for getting in touch. I was excited to hear from Kittycat that there's another person out there getting benefits from doxycycline. Metronidazole and neomycin also work for me, although the latter makes me very tired. I have to follow a very strict diet on both.

Do you also have this issue with colds? Assuming, of course, that you are able to smell trimethylamine and would know the answer to that question? Unfortunately I have not got used to the smell at all, but I think I prefer it that way, as at least I don't have to rely on people's reactions.

Hmm, it sounds like we are both quite typical in terms of onset around puberty, but it's good to be open to other possible causes. You never know!

Nice chatting with you...

:)

UPDATE

After a lot of procrastination due to other (much more serious) medical problems, I've been prescribed 1 x 100mg doxycycline per day for seven weeks. I'll let you know how I get on...

Keep me posted on how you get on? I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow for a prescription of antibiotics. Going to try a different one to see what happens. I'll post what I get when I see him. Want to go clubbing?
