Keeping calorie content up w/hypoglycemia

Hello all,

I just registered for this website because I was hoping I could get some help from people much more knowledgeable than myself. First of I want to say that I DO NOT suffer from this malady that this website offers support for. However, I am starting a low choline diet for other reasons, and have begun doing a little bit of research. I have read the lists of high and low choline foods, however I seem to be in a predicament, hence my two questions that I have, that I'm hoping you guys will be able to help me with.

My first question is, it seems like all the foods on the list are high glycemic foods and personally, I have hypoglycemia. I have to always take in a balance of sugar/carbs to fats to proteins to maintain stable blood sugar levels. Are there any suggestions?

My 2nd question ties into the first. Since I cannot just load up on white rice and fruits and carbs, how can I get enough calories? I am a 6'0 155lb male who is struggling to maintain weight already without losing any.

Those are my main two questions and I hope someone can offer some advice for me. Keep in mind that I do not have a problem with odor, so foods that are high in sulfur but low in choline (if that's is how it works) would be fine with me. I just need to find a good list of foods that are low choline but high in fat and are blood sugar friendly. Thank you in advance for any responses! I greatly appreciate it :)

I find your post very interesting. I have never heard of anybody without TMAU needing to do a low choline diet before. Do you mind if I ask why you need to do this? You don't have to answer if you don't want to.

Yes, you are right that a lot of the foods here contain many simple sugars, and I'm not overly happy with it myself!

I'm not sure how helpful I can be. The best people to try are the dieticians at UCL/The National Hospital in London. They are the only centre in the UK to advise on a lot of specialist diets, such as low choline, low protein etc. Don't get me wrong, I've talked to people who've worked there who are *SO* stupid it's unbelieveable. Seriously, I've done a day's reading and managed to understand my condition better than them! Still, if you ask for referral and persevere, you will eventually find somebody who is knowledgeable - I've no doubt about that.

In the meantime, here's some stuff off the top of my head:

1. Olive oil, soybean oil and canola oil are all surprisingly low in choline. You could use them to make salad dressings or similar?
2. Actual olives are quite high in fat.
3. Egg whites are a good source of protein. You could start the day with a large egg white omelette and some salad?
4. There are many brassicas/cruciferous vegetables that we don't eat because they reduce liver enzyme function, but you could add them to stir-fries if they are low in choline?
5. Brown rice and pastas are higher in choline, but they're not high choline per se. They are surely better than nothing?
6. Sometimes I make stir fries with vermicelli rice noodles, vegetables, chilli and egg whites. They go well with salad and lime dressing.
7. There's something on the USDA database called psyllium seed husk fibre. No idea what it is, but it's apparently a good source of fibre.
8. Some people on here eat turkey, but I personally think it's very high in choline, and I don't eat meat anyway!

Realistically, I think you will find yourself eating large meals often in order to maintain your weight.
