Elemental diet

Postby robert123 » Tue Jul 17, 2012 4:30 pm

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone on here has tried an elemental diet? It's supposed to be some sort of liquid formula (sounds lovely) that contains all the nutrients you need but broken down into its constituent parts so you won't have to digest it. In his book A New IBS solution Mark Pimental states that going on this diet for two weeks can get rid of sibo. Also a lot of crohns sufferers seem to have gotten some relief from it though unfortunately it seems to be only a short term effect. I think Vivonex is used in America for an elemental diet, not too sure is it used on Britain. Also can't say whether it's got a lot of choline in it. Was thinking of going on it for a while, would love to hear if anyone has experience or thoguhts on this, thanks a million

Hi,
Yes I have been on the elemental diet for crohns which certainly helped with the crohns - I was able to come right of steroids etc.
The diet is very tough to follow - after a week or so just drinking cold liquid (and some of the 'flavours' are horrible) you start craving for 'real' food and you have to fully commit 100% or you will just give in .
I have been on the diet 3 times now, not sure if/how it helped with tmau as I was that ill with crohns the tmau was the least of my worries.
The cartons were called 'elemental e028' and the whole thing was done in close consultation with a specialist dietitian

Just had a look - there is 45.8mg of choline per 250ml carton. I worked up to 12 cartons a day = 550mg/day (215 cals/carton)
btw - the diet is really expensive - about £700/month if I remember correctly so your GP will need a good reason to prescribe it - as I always say everyone needs to seek specialist dietitian advice before considering ANY change to their diet.

Thanks very much for the info (and also for all the great work you do on here). It does sound horrendous to be honest from what you say. Still I am running out of things to eat. I did get a negative result from a tmau test though for a number of reasons I strongly suspect it's a false negative. But I was tested positive for sibo so apparently starch is bad for that and I had a very bad experience once after eating too much grains like rice and oat cakes. Also meat, like most people on here, affects me badly. That doesn't leave too much, don't think I could survive on vegetables alone so I might give the elemental thing (if I could get it on perscription) a go for a little while even though my willpower is pretty poor. Fair dues to you for going on it a few times, it must have been extremely though going. Thanks again for the feedback
