TMAU on One Show

Postby gazela » Sun Apr 18, 2010 4:14 pm

8-) Hi everyone, the BBC One Show is doing a feature on TMAU next Friday 23rd of April at 7.00 pm.

:( It is a health section all about TMAU, and has my story about how my wife and I live with this now I have been diagnosed possitive.

 It was all filmed this past week and Dr. Lachman is in it.

 I am a little nervous about this as it will be seen by far more people than in the Chat mag.

 Lets hope its all good that comes from its showing?

Hi,
Fantastic news!. Thanks for letting us know when to watch The One Show. I've not watched the show for a couple of months now - so I'll know to watch that night.

The more the general public and indeed Doctors get to see about this condition the better. They need to know that sufferers are'nt deliberately smelling bad & that there's nothing wrong with our hygiene routines.

Well done on the One Show appearance. Hopefully bringing the condition more out in the open will help
all those suffering, and help those who have'nt yet been diagnosed.
At my office today the others were complaining about another staff members underarm body odour. So when I had a meeting with my immediate boss, I bought the subject up 'cause I know they've been talking about me too.
But their immediate reaction was to deny that I smell, to say that they've never noticed anything. that they only have a problem with the other staff member..... I stuck up for the other person saying that people who suffer from hyperhydrosis often have good hygiene & do wear the deodorants they think she does'nt use, but may even need to take the botox, or operation on the sweat glands route.
So I told them my condition was on the One Show tonight, explained that I hardly eat during the week because of it, and I know I can smell like rotten meat/manure/fish.
I feel at risk of losing my job because of the smells, and feel depressed about it. But they need to know that
its not my fault.

Hi Gazela,

You are a very mentally 'together' to do what you have done - I am in awe of you and your fantastic wife. A lot of people watching that (including myself!) will be green with envy at your supportive relationship. ;) I hope your confidence grows as you are more open about the problem. I wish I could be more like you! 8-)

Unfortunately I was at someone elses house when the programme was on so only got to see it out of the corner of one eye! But what did you make of the presenters reaction to it? I heard something about footballers not smelling much because they took a lot of showers after matches, or something like that..missing the point or what!....

And gazela, I noticed you seemed to concentrate on your feet with the odour. Do you think thats where a lot of the odour is coming from? People have commented on my feet smelling, I suppose it is maybe wherever we sweat and thats probably the largest volume of sweat from the body?....you should patent those bags you were putting on your feet! What do you put in there? Is it an antifungal/bacterial concoction? Dear g@d the things we are reduced to with this flipping condition! If you didnt laugh you would cry!

And Magsie,

thanks for the date info on the magazine, I will try and get ahold of a back issue, or it looks like we might see it on this site. I am soooo happy for you that you had the intelligence and motivation to step up to your manager and confront the bullying behaviour. I cant even begin to think of doing that, and you are very inspiring :D Now that your side of the story is on record, any comments from others towards yourself or within earshot of you should be classed as harassment and should land the offenders in deep trouble, so hopefully they will back off and stop giving you cause for worry.

Love to all!

:x Hi All

Just thought I could mention that you can view the One Show TMAU prog. on BBC I player !!

Anyone who missed it can see the whole thing, hope this is useful.

For anyone who wants to know my full daily washing routine here it is........

On the evening before going to bed I put ODOR-BAN, a very strong antiperspirant, on my underarms, feet and groin area.

In the morning, I then have a bath to wash this off. I use Dermol 600 emolient in the bath, instead of soap.

I then use Mitcham antiperspirant under my arms. I put Scholl foot spray on my feet. I then put a mixture of Scholl foot power and Boots highly absorbent foot powder together on my feet, using a bag.

I put clean socks, underwear and tee-shirt on every morning. My socks, underpants and vest all have silver fibre in them (X-Scent) that kills bacteria on contact. I also use Odor-Eaters in all my footwear.

I do not use any scented products at all, as this seems to exacerbate the problem.

I take 6 charcoal tablets a day. I take 4 Champex tablets a day. I also use Chlorophyll and body mints daily.

I have another bath when I return from work every evening and repeat the above process.

I have also been put on a course of antibiotics which are Neomycin 500 mg for two weeks and then eight weeks off and again another two weeks etc etc. This gives help for several weeks after finishing the two week course. I then use probiotics during the eight week period. I also take vitamin B2 riboflavin 100 mg tablets, two per day.

It seems a lot, but I try whatever I can.

Hi Gazela,
Thanks so much for posting the details of your regime on here, it'll help many others to know what products
they can try.
I already use Mitcham and have tried so many products - I guess our bathrooms tend to resemble a chemists
shop with all the products we buy. The cost of the special underwear too, I bought undies with charcoal pads in, they prevent an accidental flatulence episode causing a smell, but they don't stop a huge TMAU smell!
The more people know about this disorder the better, and we need more brave people like yourself to stand up for us all & inform the public that we are human too. Its like we have to be super human in the cleanliness stakes.!

Hmmmm, very interesting. I like the bag idea - keeps all the talc in one place rather than all over the bedroom. Clever.....

Gazela, I really appreciate you taking the time to share all the research you have done on how to deal with this.

Can i ask you, do you use the emolient for any specific reason, or is it just a neutral ph and avoids using soap?
